When I am painting I like to listen to something.

Do you?

My Doodles

Since I now have a home studio and I’m up here by myself with my two doodles, I enjoy having music playing or a audiobook on or a podcast going. And I love all three. I change it around, but lately I’ve gotten into podcasts. I thought I would share some of my favorite ones with you.

The Artful Painter

A podcast hosted by Carl Olson Jr. He interviews artists about their journey, their art and their process. Carl is a great interviewer with a “fantastic radio voice” and asks the most pertinent questions from these fine artists. They have all been so willing to share with his listeners lots of helpful tips, such as the palette colors they like, must-have tools or supplies, their mentors, where they go to paint, and much more. He will promote them by linking their website and social media sites, letting us know about any upcoming shows, or about products they may be selling. That’s how I found out about Kami Mendlik’s new book, Color Relativity: Creating the Illusion of Light with Paint. There’s been 72 episodes. He’s on a brief break, as he is moving from Georgia to Colorado, but he will be back soon. Check him out for sure, he will not disappoint.

Art Juice

A podcast hosted by Louise Fletcher and Alice Sheridan. They are both wonderful abstract artists in the UK and they have delightful conversations about the realities of life as professional artists. They share what they are doing, discuss practical issues on the business side as well as the creative side of art making. They answer questions from their listeners, they keep us up to date on social media issues, as well as networking, starting a new series and how to stay on track. They interview other creatives and have a lot of fun doing this podcast. There have been 180 episodes so far, so scroll through and start listening to these lovely ladies.

Louise has written a beautiful book Life Force where she painted her response to poems written by Ted Hughes. It is a must have. Both Louise and Alice teach workshops and have lots of educational resources. Alice runs a Membership Club for Artists called The Connected Artist, which is chock full of education and advice.

The Messy Studio

A podcast hosted by Rebecca Crowell and her son Ross Ticknor. Their conversations are broad, and eclectic, are focused on ideas and information that other artists will find helpful in their work and their business. Rebecca brings to this podcast her thoughts and experiences from three decades of abstract painting, teaching and traveling. Especially interesting are the artist residencies she attends in Ireland and other awesome places. Ross is also an artist, his medium is 3D art and ceramics. He is a web designer and producer of audiobooks, among other ventures. He brings an entrepreneurial Millennial perspective to the talks. So far they have produced 223 episodes, coming out with new ones every weekend. Be sure to tune in!

Rebecca is widely known for her innovative painting techniques involving Cold Wax medium with her Oils. She and Jerry McLaughlin have published a book and comprehensive guide and resource on this medium, called Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations. They also run the popular Cold Wax Academy, which is membership based and filled with the world’s top-rated educational teaching sessions and instructional videos on every aspect of using cold wax.

There are many more podcasts for artists, collectors, and those interested in all things creative out there. I will continue sharing them in future posts, so stay tuned!

(Much of the above information was gleaned from the artist’s website, as I found them to be very resourceful.)

Hope you enjoyed my blog post.
